Five Simple Things (September 30)

 Hello.

Here are five things this week.

1. This Day.

We celebrated Skylar's birthday this week and took him to Valley River Center in Eugene to let him pick up a few things he's been wanting. The jacket he got that he is wearing in the photo above is sold out, but here is one similar.

Above is the cake baking and icing video reel I created on Instagram. It was a lot of fun piecing all of the steps together. You can see the original video here.

2. This Wrap.

This is the falafel wrap that was delicious when I had it, but ended up giving me food poisoning afterwards. First time I've ever tried falafel, and it will probably be the last. Falafel is notorious for bacteria if it isn't stored, or cooked correctly, so be cautious. First time I've ever had food poisoning and it is rough.

3. These Clouds.

Sometimes storm clouds rolling in are beautiful. These clouds brought several days of rain with them, but definitely were pretty beforehand.

4. These Lamps.

We've had these lamps for at least 20 years, but this week we decided that their time in our house is over. It's weird not having them on the fireplace anymore, or randomly moved from room to room, but the lady I sold them to on Craigslist will give them a great home and their new adventures are underway. I've been on a downsizing track for quite some time and anything I feel that doesn't earn its place in our house ends up being donated, or sold. In 2023 we plan to get rid of a lot more things over the course of the year. Minimizing the things in your life really does have a great impact in your overall mental state, too. If  you need tips, or a push in the right direction, check out my Minimalism page at the top of my blog.

5. This Maze.

This corn maze is a short distance from us here in the Willamette Valley and I absolutely love their corn maze message this year. With September being National Suicide Prevention Month it's such a great message to put out into the world right now. Suicide is linked to depression, anxiety, PTSD, and other mental health issues and is definitely a huge crisis in the United States, and worldwide. Those that don't suffer from depression, or other mental health issues, it's hard for them to grasp why suicide is a choice with some that suffer. Finding a purpose in life isn't always the answer to depression. Trauma, mental illness, and life experiences that bring on stressors all contribute to depression and anxiety. With help people can get past certain depression-type symptoms. 988 is now available nationwide and will help in situations where the person suffering doesn't have immediate, present support in front of them. Licensed mental health therapist are available under 988 through calling, or even texting. Let's stop this stigma that depression isn't real, and anxiety is all in our heads. It's very real, and until everyone helps, we won't get better. Please pass along the 988 number to anyone and everyone, and please stop the negativity and harsh options of those that suffer worse than you with mental health issues. We can do this and we can get better with positive support and encouragement. Everyone is enough, we just need to keep holding up and supporting those that don't think they are. Be that change! Be that help! Be that voice they need!

Positive affirmations this week:

I always find it helpful to my mental health issues when I help someone else and see them happy. I try to give homeless people water, or a meal, or ask someone how their day is. I try to smile at strangers in my car when I'm driving and they are crossing the street, or even tell gas station attendants that I appreciate them. Kindness is free and we make a choice every day to be a better person. Try to make a point in one month to do something kind every day of that month. Start in October and make it a point to yourself to be a better person, even to yourself. You can do this!

Have a nice weekend.

Five Simple Things (December 17)

Hello.

Here are five things this week.

1. This Tree.

The tree in our city and the park that gets a slash of color this time of year was shining bright, even through the rain. I always admire it from a distance due to the cluster of lights everywhere. It's kind of a sensory overload with how many lights they put up each year. Plus, I think it looks better from a distance anyway.

2. These Boys.

The boys agreed to do a No Shave November this year and we donated to prostate health, as well. We try to pick a charity each year around December and this was the first time we participated in the NSN. You can help us, too by donated through the No Shave November page here, or creating your own page to participate. Once December came, though, the boys were happy to be able to shave once again, but we were able to raise $200 towards this great cause.

3. This Lights.

Skylar and me are huge Stranger Things fans and I've been looking out for some lights similar to the ones Joyce Byers hung up in her living room to communicate with Will. I found these for now. They are close, but not quite the same. I will continue to hunt for them, but for now, these are pretty close.

4. These Sandwiches.

Skylar and Jeff went to pick up lunch at our local food co-op and the deli worker, that we all know, made our sandwiches. She is always so kind to us and her sweet messages made our day.

5. This Box.

This week's Misfits Market box was full of great things. Trail mix, vegetables, fruits, sparkling water, and snacks. We are loving our subscription to this box. Everything that comes in the boxes are things we would buy ourselves. Most things are USDA Organic, but everything that comes is nongmo. After switching to 100% nongmo, we are pleased to find a food box that respects those values. You can sign up here to start your own subscription and to get $10 off your first box.

Did you catch the Geminids Meteor Shower on December 13?

Positive affirmations this week:

Keeping your surroundings clutter-free actually helps your mental health more than you think. I find myself getting scatter-brained, irritable, and edgy when I don't have my house, rooms, car, or even yard in tidy order. If you aren't sure where to start, start in one room and organize it for a week. Stay in that one room and don't venture away from it until that room is where you want it, as far as being tidy. Once that room is done, more to another room. I started small and now am where I want to be. Every day is a day to declutter more. I take note of what I bring through my door and make sure it earns its place in my house, or yard. Keeping things tidy will help keep your mental health in check over time. You can do this! Have a nice weekend.

Minimalism: End of Spring Cleaning

Time for end of spring cleaning, am I right? This past year has been intense and I'm starting to be a bit more selfish with my time and energy. I have some repairing and damage to fix to myself, as well and this spring to summer transition I am spending more time doing more selfcare and focusing on positive changes. I've been doing that for a few months now, but spring is really the time to do some cleaning and clearing. I've decided to spend this time ridding the house of germs, cleaning up our "make-shift" pantry, and boosting our immune systems and self worth. I decided now is the time to go through and get rid of many things in our possession that we are only keeping out of not hurting other's feelings. Emotional attachment is the worst kind of attachment to break, but now is the time. That means, cleaning a lot of areas that seem to get neglected in our day to day activities, donating gifts that we don't even like, and getting rid of clothing that no longer fits. Spring is the perfect time to do some spring cleaning, in more ways than one. Here's a list of things I am tackling this spring to get them cleaned and back to looking and feeling fresh.

*Window Cleaning: There's 12 windows, total in this rental house. Each one of them will be getting a through and well-deserved cleaning inside and a through washing outside, too. Plus, all of the curtains will be getting a good washing, as well as the curtain rods removed and cleaned.

*Microwave and Oven: A few drops of lemon juice and lemon essential oil in a glass bowl of water and placed inside the microwave for 20 seconds before wiping it out, helps with the smell and to help remove any stuck on food particles along the sides and on the top. For the oven, I use a squirt bottle with warm water and lemon essential oil, spray around the oven and hit the self cleaning cycle.

*Floors: The floors in this old house are a mix between, linoleum, carpet, carpeted stairs, carpet squares, fake wood vinyl, and chippy old linoleum in the laundry room. We've replaced the bathroom flooring a few years ago (a reveal of that will come soon), but overall this old house could use a bit of TLC with the floors. Unfortunately, renting you are limited on what you can do. The bathroom was a no brainer and after waiting five years for the "landlord" to do it, we finally just pulled the trigger and did it ourselves. It was either that, or fall through the floor. I will be using Dr. Bronner's soaps, vinegar, and some essential oils to get stubborn stains off the floors. It works great and their Sal Suds work amazingly well on all floor types. For the carpets, I use a carpet shampooer and go over the floors with a water/vinegar mix, and then again with the the vinegar/essential oil mixture with water. I've found it works the best, even in those machines, and doesn't leave a chemical smell for several days afterwards. I use peppermint essential oil on the hard floor surfaces. It seems to help keep spiders and ants at bay. I also use peppermint essential oils near doorways and windows.
A good recipe I follow:
1. One part vinegar
2. Two parts water
3. 1-2 drops of Dr. Bronner's unscented castile soap
4. 8-10 drops lemongrass essential oil on open floors and bathroom
5. 8-10 drops peppermint essential oil for around doorways and windows

*Walls: Go old vinegar and hot water works the best. We don't have small children in this house, so it's not a huge cause for elbow grease on the walls, but there are a few areas that take a bit more scrubbing; door frames, garage entrance, bathroom wall, kitchen wall, etc. For those, straight vinegar and a bit of baking soda gets it right off. I am planning on repainting a few areas that seem to have heavier traffic throughout the year, too.

*Furniture: I vacuum and scrub with water/vinegar mix for stains. We don't have a lot of furniture that has cloth on it, so that part is pretty simple. We do have a lot of wood furniture and a simple mixture of vinegar and water gets those looking like new.

*Refrigerator/Washer/Dryer/Oven: I like to pull these out once a spring and clean well under, behind, and even inside of them. I pull everything out of the refrigerator, wash the shelves, sides, and top, as well as the freezer, with a water/vinegar mix. Throw away old, or expired foods and reorganize to suit our needs. When I pull the refrigerator out, I clean the drip pan, and vacuum the coils and underneath. I hand wipe the underside of the refrigerator with a water/vinegar mix and wipe down any areas that seem to accumulate dust or debris. I run the washer with a hot load and vinegar and soap inside the washer. I clean the water pipes, water shut off knobs and around the sides and top of the machine. For the dryer, I do the same, clean the sides, and top and wipe the inside out with a water/vinegar mix. With the oven, I pull it out the oven completely (unplugging it) and clean the underside of the oven and wipe down the floor entirely where it sits. I like to clean the walls around all of these machines, too.

*Light Fixtures/Door Knobs/Locks/Light Switches: These should be cleaned at least once a week, if not once a month, anyway. The light fixtures and ceiling fans maybe every six months, depending on where you live and how much dust your house accumulates. This house seems to be a dust trap, as well as a place spiders like to hang out, for some reason. I've read it has a lot to do with drafts and this house is definitely drafty, even at the best of times. I like to wipe and clean everything with a vinegar/water mix and hit the dusty areas with a wet rag at least once a month, but spring is a good time to start a routine and get that dust, dead bugs, and other unwanted items that seem to find their way into and onto our fixtures.

*Seasonal Bedding: Wash it, fold it, and put it away in the closet. Since the seasons are changing there's no need to have heavy bedding on your bed. Also, washing your mattress cover during this time is a great routine to get into. I tend to wash ours once a week with the other bedding, but some people only wash their mattress cover every six months, or once a year. It's really up to your lifestyle and preference. I prefer a clean bed at least once a week. Vacuuming your mattress during this time is a great way to cut down on dust mites and allergies, too. Also, popping your pillows into the dryer on low cycle with some wool dryer balls with a few drops of your favorite essential oil, too, will help with allergies and dust mites, as well.

*Garage: I like to take everything out, sort through things one-by-one and donate things we haven't used in year. A year is enough time to determine whether you're going to use something again. With the exception of items that you don't use on a regular basis, air pump, tarps, car jack, anti-freeze, first aid kit, fire extinguisher, etc. Those items are needed, but may not be used in a year's time, so hang onto them. But, sort them and keep them in an area for extended keep. If now say, you haven't used something in three years, it's probably time to let it go. Fire extinguishers and first aid items should be used, or replaced in that amount of time anyway. After everything is removed from the garage, a good spray of the floor, or a moping is needed (depending on your flooring) and cleaned of debris, car tire marks, paint spills, oils spills, etc. Once your floor is dry, start bringing items back in. Never leave items on the floor of your garage. If needed purchase shelving, or build shelving. Items on the floor tend to make the area look cluttered. Wall hooks and racks are great for items, as well, consider installing what suits your needs and keeps your garage floor tidy.

*Repainting: I like to stand outside at the front of my house with a notebook and walk through the entire house all the way to the backyard and write down anything that needs a good coat of paint. Front door entrance, vestibule, hallway, stairs, walls, kitchen, backdoor trim, garage walls, and even possibly the outside deck or porch area. Writing it down you won't forget what you saw and won't see it later and get frustrated that you forgot. All of this is a good way to start the season fresh and feel like your home is well taken care of. There are other items that get added to that list, as well. Items such as, a new piece of wood on the window where the air conditioner sits, trim replacement for a piece missing by the stairs, or even maybe a new lock on the gate. Writing them down and walking through gives you the same eye as a guest and what they could see when visiting.

I get a lot of my cleaning tips from Clean Mama. She posts some great schedules on her social media pages and I love to check in with her newest posts just to keep myself on task with everyday chores, as well as monthly, and yearly tasks. Her site also has printables and other items you can purchase to keep you accountable to your cleaning tasks. She was a huge help during our minimalism challenges on what to bring into the home and what to get rid of. It was nice to know that I wasn't alone in this desire to make my home more to our needs and wants, and keep it clean at the same time.

I follow this rough draft of chores, but with a few additional things added that fit our lifestyle. I'm a Virgo and as a Virgo, "Cleanliness is instinctual for Virgos, so they will obsess about an item out of place or a surface stain until it's been properly taken care of." Remember, we are not looking for perfection.

Five Simple Things (February 5)

Hello.

This week we did a bit of "ad" spot with the Velveeta Fresh Packs I received a few weeks ago from Influenster. We created some dishes with the packs and enjoyed them during our game night. We also had some storms roll through. As much as I get tired of the rain this season it was welcomed because of how rough last summer was for us all here. The storm clouds were actually a pretty sight and after the rain moved through a huge complete rainbow came. We did a bit of baking and also took two loads of clothing donations to the clothing bins. We are slowly seeing the light at the end of the tunnel with our minimizing and downsizing. I am pleased with where we are right now, but honestly, keeping things in check is an ongoing process. Not bringing in things and keeping a constant eye on when things start getting out of hand. Minimalism is something that isn't just a one time thing, it's literally you being on your toes and being fully aware of the items that don't earn their place in your house anymore, and preventing new items from coming through the door. I actually feel happier and sleep better without all the things taking up space. Here are five things this week.

1. This Sky.

Sometimes the rain is a good thing and you can't get rainbows without rain.

Jeff sent me this view of the rainbow today from his work parking lot. It seems all of us got a dose of good today.

2. This Eagle.

Eagles tend to frequent the Valley recently. I don't remember them being as prominent when I first moved here, but the last few years they have populated the Valley floor. It's interesting to see them around, and one thing I didn't realize is how big their wingspan is when they take flight. This eagle was seen near Halsey, Oregon. I got as close as I could, but he definitely was watching me the whole time. I got the pictures I wanted and left without disturbing him. My anxiety was pretty high the entire time because it was scary to some degree being this close to an amazing bird of prey.

3. This Bread.

Made some banana bread this week and we enjoyed it literally every day for breakfast all week. I use a basic banana recipe and sometimes I use pureed pumpkin to make the same recipe. Both are delicious!

4. These Boys.

They were loading the back of the car while I was watching on the reverse camera and caught them at just the right moment.

5. This Ad.

I was sent a full sized Velveeta Fresh Packs to try out in my own home and create something delicious with. I'm not the greatest cook, but I whipped up a cheese dip worthy of praise. Jeff and Skylar enjoyed it during our game night this week and they loved my version of it. I used two of the Velveeta Fresh Packs, one can of green chilies, and two tomatoes diced. I added a bit of cayenne pepper to give it a little kick. And, although we don't purchase Velveeta products frequently, this dip was amazing! I've linked all of the products I used in this recipe, so you can create it yourself! I received this as part of an influencer campaign with Influenster and Velveeta.

Positive affirmations this week:

Have a nice weekend.

Five Simple Things (January 10)

 Hello.

The year is picking up quickly and getting back on track in the right direction, I think. Hopefully, it stays that way. I maybe having some surgery planned coming soon and I'm a bit worried about that. It's a surgery I've been wanting to have for awhile, and have just been too afraid. I'll speak more on this at a later time when I'm more comfortable, maybe. But, as far as for now, we are getting things cleaned out and figured out for the new year. One thing we've been doing a lot more of is simplifying things. What does that mean? Well, we are making everything in our house earn its place. If I can't find reason in keeping it, it gets the boot. If you're looking for ways to start your own process in minimizing down, there's a link at the top of my blog to help you, it's labeled Minimalism. I'll slowly be adding things over this year to that link in order to help others. Hope you find it useful. In the meantime, here are five simple things from this week.

1. This Cabinet.

We've been slowly, but surly downsizing more and more, and this filing cabinet didn't make the cut. Lucky, it went to an accountant that lives in Newport, Oregon. I was glad to see it go to a good place and be used for a good reason. Not sure what a bad reason would be, but all the same. It was a great piece from our homeschool classroom all these years, but with Skylar being in high school now, we've cut back a lot of homeschool paperwork. That was a chore, let me tell you.

2. This Kitty.

I realized today that I take a lot of pictures of Eleven and not a lot of Hardy. It's mainly because Hardy is so high strung he can't sit for longer than five seconds without having a "squirrel" moment.

3. This Daybreak Glow.

I am definitely not a morning person, but I do appreciate the light glow of my nightlight in the mornings when I get up for the day. Yes, I sleep with a nightlight because, even though I love horror, I don't like being alone in the darkness. Living in a city, it changes you a lot. The sounds you hear are not pleasant sometimes, and having just a small beam of light when those sounds wake me up, is nice.

4. In-N-Out Burger.

A new In-N-Out Burger location went in in Salem, Oregon, and we decided to give them a try. We've had In-N-Out before in Medford, Oregon, but we didn't really like it then, so we thought we'd give them another chance. And, nope, we are not fans. One thing, is sitting in the drive through for over 30 minutes, and the food has zero taste to it. Sure, it's a basic menu of items and would otherwise go fast, but the taste of the food was extremely bland.

5. Air Museum.

Skylar and I took a drive down Highway 101 and ended up in Tillamook. We stopped at the air museum to shoot this picture and then headed back home. We really enjoy taking off on a day trip just to explore. This was one of those times.

Have a nice weekend.

Friday things

Well, Christmas is over and all through the house, everything is everywhere. We have been slowly putting things away since the holiday hustle and bustle has ended, but I still feel overwhelmed with "stuff." I really want to cut our possessions more, but I can't seem to get a handle on what needs to go and what needs to stay. We have cut our Christmas decor down to one small tote instead of the three large ones we had. (I can't even believe we had that much crap!) -Seriously!

Minimalism is always a work in progress, but one thing is for sure, we have changed one habit that I think is a great change for us. We have begun to be more conscious of what we spend our money on. We started now, but our goal for 2017 is to not purchase anything other than needs. Needs over wants. Nothing more. Needs being food, water, etc. A year of living more mindful and with less. It can be done! Hopefully on the blog I can share our progress in this step toward downsizing and being more minimal with our lives.

This coming New Year's Eve we are having a small get together with friends and are going to ring in 2017 with a bang! I can't wait to share the pictures.

Here are the things that made this week great!

1. Tree

With our recent visit to the Trees of Mystery, The Bean picked up a Redwood Tree in the gift shop. We have recently replanted it into a terracotta pot and given it a home-for-now in the window. We hope to be able to plant it permanently real soon.

2. Oatmeal

When we attended the Fill Your Pantry program we snagged some Rolled Oats from the Greenwillow Grains vendor. We cut into the bag this past week and enjoyed a breakfast of them. I have plans to make some no-bake cookies with some of them soon. Maybe New Year's Eve?

3. Kitten

This little kitten has been a mess lately. She has been really getting to our older cat, Meia, and wants to play, but she plays so rough. We are hoping a scheduled spaying will calm her down a bit and the two can get along.

4. Gift

My sister, Kendra, recently sent us a Christmas care package and the wooden board this cookbook sits on was part of that care package. It is actually sitting upside down to hold this book. The clothespin holds a photo and acts as a picture frame. Not sure exactly how I want to use it yet, but for the time being it is working as a great holder for my new cookbook. Check this cookbook out here.

5. Christmas recap

We spent an evening shortly before Christmas at The Grotto in Portland, with MacKenzie, Charlie, and Addison (here). We had a great time and I loved this picture of us taken by MacKenzie.

We ate that evening at Famous Dave's Bar-B-Que and I couldn't help but share the names of their BBQ sauce. The "Devil's Spit?" Clever!

Santa left The Bean a few Star Wars figures he has been wanting and packed his stocking full of fun things he can actually use. And some candy, of course. The Mr. and I sported out new Arkansas jackets from my parents and The Bean grabbed a quick photo of us as we were cleaning up the wrapping paper mess. We actually needed new Arkansas gear, so these were perfect! GO HOGS!

Note from S. Claus and his unfinished milk sits on the fireplace. The Bean left him a cupcake and Santa was quite stuffed by the time he hit the west coast, so he just took a few nibbles from the cake and left with a flash. Next year our Christmas might be slightly different as The Bean is going to be 14! I hope we can still hold onto the magic, but time will tell.

We will keep our gingerbread house a few more days and then it must retire to the compost bin. For now, it sits on the mantle looking quite delicious.

...And remember this thought

Have a great weekend, and an even better New Year!
