Five Simple Things (July 19)

 Hello.

Here are five things this week.

1. This kitty.

The different faces of Eleven. I've had a lot of cats growing up, and two others as an adult. Eleven is the only cat that I have had that acted human on different occasions. Her personality has been such a nice thing to have since losing my last cat, Meia. Meia was my best friends, regardless of being an animal. I believe animals come into our life, similar to humans, to help us. Eleven has helped me during some of my worst mental health days. I hope I have helped her on her hard days, too.

2. These peaches.

It's that time of year and I am loving it. In season fruits are the best right now.

3. This sunset.

West coast sunsets are the best sunsets that I have seen. The pink/red/orange skies are breathtaking. No matter where my life takes me, these are the skies that I will always talk about for the rest of my life.

4. This soap.

I have been having issues with redness on my cheeks and recently found out that it could be Rosacea. Which comes with age in some people. No one in my family has Rosacea, and a lot of times it is hereditary. I am leaning more towards it being the water in the house we are in, because of how old it is, but this rose facial soap from Dr. Botanicals has helped lessen some of that redness.

5. These sheets.

My mom gifted these sheets to Skylar when we were in Arkansas back in April. He is going to use them on his bed on the bus, once his room is completely finished. He is excited to be using them and how they remind him of where he was born. Go Hogs!

One last thing:

We have been downsizing things within our house the last few weeks and this week we took three large boxes to Safe Haven Humane Society. The same place we adopted Hardy from back in 2011. We have donated to this place for several years and with a location now in our city, it makes it so much easier to give back to a place that does so much for animals.

Positive affirmations this week:
Always been kind to your mind. You deserve the love that you give to others.
You can do this!🌈

Have a nice weekend.

Five Simple Things (June 19)

 Hello.

Another week of more progress. Got my stitches removed and there's pain with that, but overall it's nice to be able to move my arms without feeling a pulling and almost tearing sensation. My surgeron says everything is healing nicely, just slower than he would like. But, he says that's okay and to not rush it. I've had a slight pain on my right side, especially when I've been laying awhile and sit up. I have a pretty high pain tolerance, so the pain there is intense enough to make me cry. My surgeon thinks it's just tissue getting replaced inside my body and not to worry. I had to get a second mammogram this week to make sure that the tissue wasn't dead, and it's completely normal tissue, just not sure where it's supposed to go, so that is a bit alarming. Otherwise, I feel fine and I'm sleeping more than three hours at a time. Three hours at a time may not seem like much, but it's progress to me. We're still staying afloat here while everything with the pandemic gets worked out in the world. Slowly, but surely we are trying to keep everything on time, but we have had to dip into our savings a lot lately. I don't like that and I hope that stress ends sooner than later. My surgery bill has made its way to our door now and so that is another thing to add to the list of "things to figure out during a pandemic." It will all be okay. I keep telling myself that. It's fine, we're fine, it's going to be fine. Here are five things this week.

1. This Tree.

Just getting outside for a bit of fresh air and sunshine has really helped my mood. With everything else going on, I really am trying to keep my mind focused on positive things. Some days are harder than others, but I'm striving for progress not perfection.

2. This View.

With having a lot of time on my hand right now, Skylar and I were able to sort through the homeschool papers and school things to get ready for the year coming up. Skylar will be in the eleventh grade this coming school year and we are wanting to hit it with our feet running. We have a lot of past grade information that either needs to be filed away, or thrown away, so we tackled a lot of it this past week. Still have a ways to go, but it's a start.

3. These Brownies.

Skylar and I made the Olive Oil Brownies from the New York Times, this week. I will say, I mostly observed while he made, but they are delicious and well worth the time.

4. This Hook.

Was missing Baz a bit this week, but it's nice to be able to see our Free Little Library hook in is honor. It's even nicer to see people come to the little box, hook their dog's leash to the hook, and look through the books. It really does make me smile. Baz loved walks and he, Skylar, and I have covered ever inch of this city. I cry when I think about those memories, because I'm sad that he is gone, but I can't help but delight in those memories, too. I miss him terribly and I know that he is watching me every day and helping me get through my rough days, just like I helped him toward the end. My blog is dedicated to him and to my cat Meia and I will never ever forget them, or the mark they made on me and the world. They continue to leave that mark, even if it's through a small metal hook on the side of a wooden box.

5. This Sleepy Kitty.

The way she covers her face when she's napping just melts my heart. She's been a little sweetheart this week, too. It's almost like she knows when I am hurting more than normal and likes to comfort me. Reminds me so much of Meia and I just love that.

Positive affirmations this week: "When the seasons change, what do you focus on?"
With the change of seasons I tend to look at it like a fresh start.
*Spring is about learning: (Learning what you did wrong the following year, or season, and make those changes.)
*Summer is about celebration: (Celebrate what you've accomplished and celebrate the fact that you've come along way since last summer.)
*Autumn is about preparation: (Preparing for the coming winter season and being able to be as prepared as you can for anything that is coming your way until the summer comes again.)
*Winter is about reflection: (I used this time to reflect on how far I've come and reflect on all the good I did throughout the year. I try my best not to focus on the negative or bad things, but sometimes they rear their ugly head and I deal with them head on. I am not a carpet sweeper. I handle things directly and the best way they suit me.)
I hope these tips help you, too.

Have a nice weekend.

Five simple things

Hello.

This week wasn't as hot as last week, with last week getting up over 100 degrees on a couple of days. We did get a few things done this week that we've been procrastinating. Things like, draw up rough plans for a floating deck build, get homeschool papers in order and organize The Bean's material for the following year. We don't really take a summer vacation, but we do take some time to sort things out from time to time and the summer months gives us that time. We don't have stacks of papers, or even filing drawers full of workbooks, or worksheets-What we do have is work that was done throughout the year, we keep our favorites, and recycle the rest. In our efforts to go more minimal with our living we like to keep things with the homeschool classroom minimal, as well. Here is what the rest of our week looked like:

Saturday: We finished our permanent volleyball poles and went on a hunt for a net. We found a great one at a sporting goods store in Corvallis, Oregon, and we promptly put it up. We tried out the poles and net to see if they were good to go and once we were all in agreement that it was "job well done" we played several games clear into the evening. We are all pretty excited that we have our own volleyball court in our backyard. More on this later.

Sunday: The Mr. unfortunately had to work the weekend through. It's hard to plan anything on the work weekends, but on those days we make small plans and try to get them done before Monday. One of those plans this week was to buy the materials we needed for our rough drawing of a floating deck The Mr. has been wanting to build in our backyard. We weren't sure exactly what we were going for until we started looking through Home Depot for the goods. We ended up buying half the materials right now and setting them up just to make sure it is what we are going for. We hit the jackpot and picked up the right length, so we will finish purchasing the floating deck materials next weekend and finish the job. More on this later.

Monday: Monday is what we like to refer to as, "Monday Madness." The Bean and I use this phrase in our homeschooling just to be sure and get everything done in the classroom that we weren't able to complete the week before. We also use this time to get everything in the house done and ready for the rest of the week, too. It's a great way to start the week and get things done that we would ultimately put off and more than likely not get done. I like to use the "Monday Madness" time to get my blog organized for the week and it really helps me stay on track for the week, too. Speaking of blog, have you seen the clip art section of my blog yet? Check out the calendar prints by scrolling down the page. They are custom-made and fit a three-ring binder. I use them to stay organized and write down everything each month to keep us all on the right track in our home. If you need a bit of help keeping things organized, try my printables for the calendar. I am currently working on a blog organizer sheet, so check back soon for that.

Tuesday: We ended up taking our 17-year-old Persian/Siamese kitty, Meia, to the veterinarian. She hasn't been acting herself for awhile and given her age, we just aren't sure what was going on. The veterinarian said her white blood cells are elevated and put her on some antibiotics and pain medicine. We hope this helps her get back to her old self again, but if not, we are prepared to face what comes next. She's been a great cat and The Mr. and I have had her since she was a kitten. She's starting to show a bit more action and looks as though she is feeling better, so we have our fingers crossed. Last September we lost our oldest dog, Baz, so we really aren't emotionally ready to lose another one of our pet friends. We have high hopes that this medicine will help her and keep her with us for a few more years.

Wednesday: The Mr. took the day off from work to be home with us while we stayed alert with Meia. She seemed to be feeling a little better, but still shows signs of her age from time to time. We also went and picked up our new glasses. The Bean looks sharp in his new pair and The Mr. looks like Drew Carey with his new specs. We are all glad to have them though because a couple of us were starting to get eyestrain headaches. I'll share a picture of us with these new specs on soon.

Thursday: We spent the day "saving" our neighbor's dogs. As hot as it has been a lot of pet owners forget to refresh their outside pets water bowl and the animals get dehydrated, have a heat stroke, or worse. On Thursday our neighbor's dogs started acting strange about 9:00 a.m. They were drooling a lot, lethargic, wide-eyed, and twitching every few minutes as if they were dying. The Bean and I rushed over and told them something was wrong, with one dog, the puppy, in worse shape than the older dog. They agreed to let me take it to the veterinarian to get it some help, if I could. The Bean and I ended up taking the puppy to a local vet and they determined that the dog had some broken ribs, was extremely dehydrated, and could have internal bleeding. They sedated the puppy and gave it an IV of fluids and in turn I was to drive it to the Linn County Animal Control for further treatment. The Bean and I did just that and in turn our neighbors lost ownership of their dog. They informed me when I took the puppy to not let the veterinarian, or the animal control know that it was theirs. Linn County Animal Control now has the puppy and will hopefully be able to bring it back to health and adopt it out after it recovers. The Bean and I returned home and cleaned out the back of the car from where the dog had been and as soon as we finished our neighbor came back over and asked if we could give him a ride to take his other dog to the veterinarian because it was starting to act the same way as the puppy. I agreed and drove him to an emergency veterinarian in Albany, Oregon, after two local veterinarians had turned him down for treatment. After about an hour of sitting with him, helping him fill out the proper paperwork, and hearing him use a lot of profanity toward the staff, they informed him that his dog had eating either marijuana, or other narcotics. I was not surprised one bit by the information. Our neighbors are quite the potheads and when picking up the puppy earlier in the day a woman coming out of the garage told me that the dogs could have gotten her back pain medication that was sitting on the porch. Unbelievable, right? So needless to say, we gave him a ride home with his dog, gave him some money for dog food, told him to always have water for them no matter what, and were glad at the fact that we were able to get the puppy away from them and hopefully saved its life. I reported the entire incident to the local police department and informed them of everything that had transpired. I am not sure what can be done as of right now, but at least I feel we did the most we could do for those animals. Bad thing is, there are three other dogs on the property, too. The Mr., The Bean, and I will definitely have our eyes on them from time to time just to make sure they are being cared for properly.

Friday: Seeing as Thursday had us going with excitement from 9:00 a.m. until about 7:00 p.m. we are going to take today low and slow. The Bean and I have a few things to cover in the homeschool classroom and I plan on working on the Forest School page on my blog. I am really happy with the way our homeschooling has progressed into what it has. I look forward to sharing all of our lessons under that page tab soon.

For the rest of the week, here are five simple things that made this week good.

1. This stack of hay...

The fields are being plowed, rowed, and baled around the Valley this week. This time of year is always hard on allergy sufferers, but the grass harvest seems to only last for a few weeks and the sneezing goes with it.

2. Lebanon turkeys...

Always fun to see them out and about. This time they came through our yard and had babies with them. They are neat birds and 100% wild.

3. The girls...

With the hot temperatures the girls have been spending a lot more time poolside and staying wet. We've enjoyed watching them just be ducks the last couple of weeks.

4. These silicone items...

On our journey to become plastic-free, more zero waste, and to be more minimal we are slowly finding items that can help keep us on track. These silicone jar lid covers can fit a wide mouth or regular mouth jar top and have a hole for a straw on the top. We have already been using them and they are great for taking drinks on the road. The other item on the right is a summertime must have! Nothing better than homemade popsicles! Both of these items can be found on here and here.

5. This sunset...

Living on the western end of the United States gives us a view of the setting sun that those in central, or eastern states will never see. Such a beautiful sight some evenings.

Spark of Loves this Week: Receipt, Picture, Slugs, Milkshake, Bag, Bread, Kitty, Finger, Package, Computer

This Receipt.

Because it is from Burgerville and it breaks down everything you purchase and makes you aware of the calories you consume.

This Picture.

Because my son loves lemons and limes and eats them like crazy.

These Slugs.

Because having a little boy there's never a dull moment when it comes to bugs, slugs, and other slimy thugs.

This Milkshake.

Because he deserved it.

This Bag.

Because with jewelry making I seem to always be left with odds and ends and soon my new store will be up and running.

This Bread.

Because it was fun to make and my little helper was just that, a big help!

This Kitty.

Because my little Meia turns 13 this year and she still acts like a little kitten at times.

This Finger.

Because according to my kid, it's the "dirty" finger. Ha!

This Package.

Because it came from my mom all the way from Arkansas and was such a great surprise.  If you get a minute, check out the Okie Art Shack. Lots of great vintage items for sale!

This Computer.

Because my Compaq desktop finally needed to be upgraded.  I've always been a Compaq customer, but this time I went with a Toshiba.  And I have always been a desktop person too, and I have finally moved into the modern world and have myself a laptop now.  It's one more step into living a greener lifestyle for me, as well. I love it!

Eco-Tip:  Unless your laundry is very soiled, always try to wash it in cold water.  The amount of hot water wasted on laundry that doesn't need to be washed in hot or warm water is waste that can be cut down on year after year if cold water is used.  For this and other tips on going green visit, The Earth and Me Go Green.

Five Simple Things

 Hello.

Hope things are well on your end. Things are slowly getting back to focus here with the holidays coming up. I usually get my Christmas shopping done early and the only "stress" I have is shipping them out to family and friends back in Arkansas. I have stopped doing Christmas holiday cards, and that's a huge relief. When Christmas greeting cards become a chore, or get judged to some degree, it really takes the fun out of them, entirely. So, with not doing those yearly anymore, I can focus on more important things for the holidays. Bad side of not sending out Christmas cards, we don't get ones in return. I'm not sure how I feel about that, but oh, well, there's more things to be upset over than that. You can see out last Christmas card photoshoot here. It was a lot of fun for us. Here are some things that are worth mentioning this week.

1. IKEA Chairs.

We've been looking into replacing a chair in our TV room, but haven't decided on a good one yet. We really like the look of these gray ones from IKEA, and this display really set the tone for us. Still not sure, but this one is a big "maybe." For the curious, this chair is the STRANDMON line.

2. This Pre-lit Tree.

We normally get a real tree for the front room of the house, but decided to get a fake, pre-lit, tree for the TV room. I liked how it looked so much that we are probably going to leave it up all the time.

3. Eleven Cat.

December is your birthday and even though someone dumped her out, she's been such a great kitty. Since Meia died, it's nice to have another cat around the house to take care of it and if I'm being completely honest, I miss the hell out of my cat and Eleven has helped with the healing.

4. Lava Rock.

It's that time of year again, where the roads of covered with lava rock. Coming from a state that never used anything even remotely close to this, I still find this incredibly cool. I mean, think about it, it's rock that came from a volcano, used on roads during icy weather. To me, that is super cool!

5.  Skincare.

I've been trying to get better at taking care of myself and my skin. I was a diehard user of Burt's Bees Tomato Complexion Soap and when Clorox bought the Burt's Bees company, they discontinued it. I have been on a hunt for something just as affective and I am still searching, but in the meantime, I am working on some different skincare techniques. One being the cleansing soaps with hemp stem cells, and using facial oils for moisturizer instead of lotions. I also use a green clay mask once a week and exfoliate once a week, as well. I have oily to combination skin, so it seems to be working so far. Drinking a lot more water, has also helped, as well.
Here are the brands I recommend:
